Bokeo to use water from the Mekong to ease tap water shortage
(KPL) Bokeo province has decided to invest 350 million kip in resolving water supply shortage in Houai Sai district, according to local official.
Director of the Water Supply of Bokeo province, Mr. Bounlay Mingboupha said that the water supply shortage resolution project will begin this week and be over next month.
The stream in Houai Sai district runs shallow so it cannot provide enough water to the Water Supply of Bokeo province to produce for its residents. As a result the province has decided to use water from the Mekong River for its production.
“Over the past four years residents in Houai Sai district, the capital of this northern province, face water shortage for their consumption between March and June.”
“Between March and June residents in Houai Sai district need 1,900 cubic metres of water for their consumption per day but the Water Supply of Bokeo province is able to supply only 1,100 or 1,200 m3 a day,” said Mr. Bounlay.
“However, the government is seeking foreign assistance to invest in building a 5,000-m3 water tank in the province to minimise water shortage in the province,” said Mr. Bounlay.
